Accounting Students and Professionals Promote Careers in Accounting to Local High Schools

Since 2014, Niagara University’s accounting society has sponsored a program in which the club officers and members make short presentations about accounting to local high school students and their teachers. Niagara students are very excited about the opportunity to visit local schools and communicate with younger students. In addition, local CPA firms, such as Dopkins & Company, Tronconi Segarra and Associates LLP and Freed Maxick CPAs, P.C., are involved and send their experts to attend these activities.

By combining the college students and practitioners in a presentation team, high school students learn what it is like to study accounting, not only in college but also in the workplace. Joining the efforts this fall, Beta Alpha Psi, the international honor society for accounting, finance and information systems majors, has sent their representatives to visit the schools.

The topics covered by NU students focus on the accounting profession, accounting programs offered at Niagara University, professional certifications and the outlook of the accounting profession, including salaries and career paths.

The practitioners from the firms share their work experience in the industry, workload, benefits and career advice to the students.

In September, the team visited Niagara Catholic High School to speak to students in teacher Brian Hall’s accounting class. Niagara’s team included Jason Cutler, ’14, MBA’15, of Freed Maxick, Dr. Lei Han, associate professor of accounting, and Niagara accounting students Emily Andrews, Samantha Martineau, Maria Sciarrino, and Allyson Thomas.

In October, the team visited Lewiston-Porter High School to talk to teacher Nicole Krawczyk and her two accounting classes. Niagara’s team included Lisa Mrkall from Tronconi Segarra and Associates LLP, Dr. Han, and sophomore accounting major Tyler Copeland.
